At the age of 11 I got involved with the juvenile criminal justice system. Richard Ramos was one of the few people in my life that was supportive and unconditional. He would come to my house any time my mother was having difficulty with me. He would hunt me down on the streets to get me to school or back home. With the support of Mr. Ramos I was able to transition from offender to a young woman ready to take on the world. I received my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Long Beach State University and Masters in Social Work from the University of Southern California. This is definitely a book worth reading. I found it insightful and interesting and I appreciate that the author shared his personal story throughout the book. I felt like I had a "window into the world" he grew up in and some of the struggles he had to overcome.The only negative critique I have of the book is its title. The title makes it appear as though it is a book for people who work with Latino youth – especially the line “Preparing Latino Youth for Leadership in the 21st Century” but as I read it, I realized the book is meant for Latino youth to read. Even though any reader would benefit - the advice and overall tone made me feel as though it was meant to be read by Latino youth. It is obvious he is trying to inspire Latino youth and relate to them, which is great, but I think the title is a bit misleading because it sounds more like a “How to” book for those in the field, not just an inspirational book for youth/Latinos. A title change or clarification on the back cover may help with this and encourage young Latino readers to pick up this book.
The book is very practical, personal and an easy read. Here are a few things that stood out to me:
·The connection between language and culture (page 40) – I had never heard it put this way before and I think it is important for non-Latinos to understand this connection.
·The clash between Chicano “sold out” and “non-sold out” Mexicans (pg. 42) – I was aware of this, but I think including this added validity to the argument that sometimes the negativity comes from within the culture, not just from outside. My only suggestion is that the author re-word the last paragraph on page 42. That first sentence especially is nearly impossible to understand.
·The section on Heroes of Hardship (pg. 76) is excellent. I would like to incorporate this into my youth mentoring programs.
·The honesty and clarity in the section about emotional abuse and how it affects a child’s inner voice was great (pg. 82) – It would have been great if the author could have included some input from social psychologists or other experts in the field to back up his claim.
·The paragraph that begins “Your Life Matters” on page 93 is very inspiring and well written and is something else I think would make a great mantra for a mentoring program.
·“Forgiveness is free. Trust must be earned.” (Page 99) Brilliant quote! The whole section on forgiveness is great and will be a great help since it as been a key hurdle for the youth I have worked with.
·“Secrets to Overcoming the Voice of Intimidation” – another great section that is very useful no matter who you are and another great “topic” worth expounding on in a future publication or blog article.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I found it very engaging and I appreciate the personal stories the author shares about his upbringing, background, personal mistakes and challenges. He also gets down to "brass tacks" and describes how to overcome hurdles in plain terms. He does not talk down to youth - he expects them to step up and be the leader they were created to be. It definitely belongs in the hands of as many youth as possible and I feel that I now have a book I can use in mentorship programs to help youth get over the hurdles they face or at the very least, provide them with a book that shows them they are not alone in their struggles.

It's very inspirational and has just plain good common sense with lots of good humor to make an easy read.
I was very encouraged by this book. It's targeted to young people, but even as an older adult, I related and was very inspired. I've worked with young people for many years and i know i will be recommending this book. It will inspire and challenge them to step out of their comfort zone. Thank you Richard.
According to Miguel Leon-Portilla, the teacher or psychologist (teixcuitiani) is the one who raises a mirror so that others may see themselves. In this tradition, Mr. Ramos offers the reader a vehicle for self-reflection and self-improvement. As a mental health professional and educator, I recommend this book to anyone interested in personal growth.
I am a middle-class, white woman who has learned the value of reading and mentoring. This book is not only a good read, it is a mentor in its own right. It targets the Latino culture but is relevant to all cultures. I grew up in poverty and abuse. And, unfortunately those are aspects of life that can become reality at any level of society. When we peer into the personal lives of any other, we may be surprised at what we see. Each of us has our own margins to overcome and a ‘mainstream’ to establish… Poverty goes beyond the monetary as mainstream goes beyond cultures. Striving toward the unique character God created each one of us to be, for me, is at the heart of this book. Richard has a profound experience base and story-telling ability that kept me engaged and wanting more.
There is truth in this book. It's a good book for anyone to read, because the we all have choices to make and we all have the seeds of leadership inside of us and any day is a good day to choose the path of leadership. Not just when you're a teenager, but I believe Richard is right by having his target audience be youth, juveniles, and adolescents, because that is the time in a person's life that most affects decisions for their future and their perspective on life.
I found myself considering the questions it poses. What does it take for a youth to become a leader and what keeps them from achieving this goal. I particularly liked the stories about the author's life and growing up in Los Angeles. Some were scary and some were bizarre, and all contributed to Richard Ramos dedicating his life to helping young people, to being a leader.
I understand the theme of leadership and each point he covers to become a leader in regards to choices, your mindset, your family, and your past. He organizes every factor that youth struggle with and gives insight on the causes of each factor. The book also contains appropriate passages and statistics from his research that relate to leadership, some of which I researched myself upon finishing the book.
I think the wisdom of Leadership is universal and this is a great study on it by an experienced leader. Thanks Richard Ramos!
Mr. Ramos provides such a relevant narrative that's not only highly relatable for young people but also much needed. As a father of 3 children in middle and high school this book encapsulates the qualities that I've been trying to reinforce and cultivate in them. My oldest son was most moved by chapter 10 that spoke to "the voice of fear and failure" and the ways to overcome it. At a recent parent-teacher conference several teachers commented on how much more engaged he was in class and the thoughtfulness of his ideas and comments. When we asked what changed for him he said the book inspired and gave him the confidence to do so. He said that once he started he was even surprised by his own words. This truly moved him from being just a student sitting in class to actively participating and leading the discussions. For me and my wife, this is solid proof that the book lives up to its title. The school was more than happy to order the book for their library when we suggested it. I hope you ask them same so more kids can be exposed to this powerful book.
