Mistwalker Saundra Mitchell Books

Loved loved loved this book! The quiet fantasy woven into the narrative, the haunting setting of small town Maine, the turmoil within the main characters. There is nothing I didn't love about this story - even the ending, which didn't happen like I wanted it to, was kinda perfect.

Strongly recommend this story for fans of Ashes on the Waves and The Scorpio Races.

Mistwalker Saundra Mitchell Books Reviews

I have a weird fascination with coastal towns and lobster (or crab) fishing families in them. Largely its due to the influence of a series I read as a child, but I think its because its so different from my life that I can't help but see magic in it. Mitchell, who wrote SHADOWED SUMMER (which I adore) and the "Vespertine" books (which I'm mixed on), has written another tale of a teenager trying to set right a wrong in her family with every resource she can and leading to mystical problems.

This isn't an action packed book--none of Mitchell's books are to be honest. They're more concerned with examining how grief (or loneliness, or love or family) affects a person who is already going through so many other changes in her life. Willa loses not only her older brother, but also her father - maybe not to death, but to the unrelenting almost paranoid fear a parent feels for the surviving child when one is lost to tragedy. In turn Willa tries to find a solution, but can't because her own grief clouds her every action and thought.

There is no clear cut antagonist here - yes Grey isn't working the side of angels, but he's in as much of an intolerable situation as Willa is with far less chance of finding his happy ending. No one is completely in the right in this book but nor is anyone completely wrong. The answers, and final decisions, that are made aren't what everyone would choose, but they are what Willa and Grey and Willa's dad choose, so for them they are "right".
I think I have waited about a year to finally read Mistwalker. And I do think the wait was worth it. <3 This is the fourth book by Saundra that I have read, and I have enjoyed them all. I'm rating this a four star. Because I loved it, but it broke my heart. See, I was wishing so hard for something that didn't happen.

But oh, I'm not sure how to talk about this book. Because Mistwalker was a beautiful book. Beautiful and heartbreaking. I really enjoyed the writing. And the characters were amazing. And I loved the story to pieces. But I kind of wanted more from the ending. Oh, it's perfect, but I wanted a tiny thing more.

This story is told from the point of view of Willa and the Grey Man. Willa is pretty amazing. I did love her. But she frustrated me a little bit. With how she behaved around this one person. Hmm. But I did love her best friend and I think they had an awesome friendship. She kind of has a boyfriend. Seth. And I'm not sure how I felt about him. He seemed sweet and kind but I didn't really think he and Willa fit together as a couple, hih.

I'm not going to say too much about this book. Just that it is a beautiful story and I enjoyed reading it. I got hooked early on and I couldn't stop reading until I had finished it. I enjoyed the writing and I liked the characters. For the most part. I did find Willa to be an interesting character. I enjoyed her family, though they are all broken over the death of her younger brother, Levi. And that broke my heart. But I loved reading about how they struggled; with family love and with money issues. It was very real.

I liked reading about the town in this book. It's small. And we don't see too much about it, but enough for me to like it. Though I don't think I could ever be a fisher, as I hate the smell. Sigh. But it do interest me. And I kind of loved that Willa and her family fished for lobsters. It was pretty awesome to read about. Though most of the scenes broke my heart a little. Mistwalker is full of feels. Good feels, bad feels. Mostly heartbreaking feels. But I loved every part of it. Okay, fine, maybe not the ending D

The other point of view is from the Grey Man. Who is actually a teenage boy. And his story is pretty heartbreaking and he gave me all the feels. I kind of loved him to pieces. And I wish his story had been happier. That is what bothered me about the ending. There is no romance between him and Willa. And I didn't really mind that at all. But oh, I wanted it. I wanted them together. Or at least to be friends. But they weren't even that. That broke my heart a little. Sniffs. Sequel one day, maybe? Fingers crossed.

But anyway. I loved reading about the Grey Man. He's such an amazing character. And his story is so interesting. And I won't spoil it. But let's just say that there is some magic involved. And a curse. And it's heartbreaking but at the same time so interesting to read about. And kind of beautiful. I really enjoyed reading about it in this book. Sigh. But yes. I really wish we had seen more of him and Willa together. I wanted them to have a friendship. Grrr. And that is why this is a four star and not a five.

I can't change my feelings about it. But. I really did enjoy this book. And I'm glad I read it. The story is amazing and the plot is so good. I didn't say much about it, but that's okay. As I think you all should read it for yourself D It is amazing. I found Mistwalker to be an exciting book. It is beautiful and heartbreaking. It gave me a lot of feelings. And while I had some issues with the lack of romance, I couldn't not like the book because of it. Cannot wait to read more upcoming books by Saundra. <3
I look at all the glowing reviews, maybe not glowing, but most of the reviews are very complimenting, and I feel bad.

I'm in a minority here. What book did I read, I wonder…

Mistwalker was one of my most anticipated books of 2014. When I saw it on NetGalley, I hit the 'request' button immediately. Then, I crossed my fingers and I waited…anxiously…and I was approved.

I actually did a little happy dance then. And happily(!!) I settled down to read it. Imagine my surprise once I realized I was bored. The pacing is slow, the writing is beautiful but I've seen better.

Yes, the setting is fairly interesting and beautiful, the idea is great. But the pacing is so damn slow that I found myself dozing off.
I wanted to like it so badly, but I could barely finish reading it.

Yet, looking at all those great reviews I kept wondering- 'did I miss something? Was I missing something?'

I kept on reading, pushing through it and hoping that at some point. At any point something would happen, something interesting. At one point I was so desperate for Something .

Sadly, for me it never came. Yes, there is that thing that happened eventually (view spoiler). But I felt as if it wasn't explained well. Why did it happen like that? WHY?

Zero. Nada.

Maybe it just wasn't for me. I don't know. I've been putting off this review long enough, and now I don't have much to write or explain.
I actually wish this book would have made me feel something. Even rage. But I feel nothing, beside maybe that it was a waste of my time. It's a weird feeling for me, to be so detached from the book and the characters. So very bored.
